VBAtl Summer Tournament Rules

All VBAtl Outdoor Tournaments are governed by USAV Outdoor rules with the few exceptions as listed below. Note that the TD may revise these for specific tournaments during the Captain's Meeting.           Please visit USAV Volleyball Rules for the online versions of the rules.

VBAtl Outdoor Tournament Exceptions/Clarifications to USAV Rules & General Format Rules

  1. Block (exception to USAV Rule 13.1.3): The block does not count as a hit (Except Open Levels)
  2. Service Receive (exception to USAV Rule 13.4.2): Finger action is not allowed on the serve receive. Double contact, without finger action is legal on serve receive.
  3. Let Serve counts.
  4. First Ball receiving (exception to USAV rule 13.4.3) : Beach digs/gators are acceptable Prolonged contact is still illegal in all cases.
  5. Oversets (exception to rule 13.4.5): Finger contact is acceptable to set the ball over the net provided: the ball direction is in the 6 or 12 o'clock relation to the body of the player. Strong wind affecting the course of a ball properly set is not a fault.
  6. Net Play: Per USAV rule.
  7. Player Contact Under the Net: Per USAV rules. A player passing under the net into the opponents court interfering with the opponents ability to play is at fault. Referees must make this call!
  8. Substitutions (exception to USAV Rules 4.3 & 9.3)
    • Doubles: None
    • Triples: Only Mens >40 and Girls Juniors are allowed 4 players on the roster, but no substitutionn is allowed during a game; between games and matches a player change is acceptable (exception is for an injury).
    • Fours: None
    • Sixes: Substitutions per USAV indoor rules or by rotating in at the serve (must rotate in all players in order the entire game)
  9. Doubles Court Size: We will be using the smaller 8m court for all doubles competition this year.
  10. Division/Seeding: Your team is expected to play at the division of the strongest player; the TD may allow exceptions for juniors, pregnant women, the boyfriend tryout, etc
  11. COED Rules
    • No courtesy rule will be enforced.
    • Rev Coed: The ball must rise if send over the net by the guy in front of the attack line. (i.e. contacting it above the net is not necessarily a fault if the hit rises)
  12. Game and Match Format (exception to USAV Rule 7.1.4): TD will set the game and match format for pool play at the beginning of the day on the pool sheet. Pool and playoff format may change depending on the lateness of the tournament progress. Rally Scoring will be used.
  13. Playoff Determination: In smaller divisions (generally 3 or fewer pools, we will seed playoff teams for byes , etc. In larger tournaments, play proceeds into playoffs as teams finish their pools in a manner to prevent teams in one pool from meeting again until the finals.
  14. Serving out of rotation (exception to USAV rules 16.3 & 16.8): No penalty. Fix the services order as soon as discovered and continue play. There is no loss of serve, no loss of points, no replays.
  15. Warmups: No pepper on the court unless you just ref'd. 6 hits and 2 serves per player max.
  16. Official Ball: We are not forcing any particular ball at tournaments, most everybody has brings acceptable balls. We do not provide balls for play at tournaments. Decision on the ball to be used is at the discretion of the referee for thematch, but may be appealed to the TD for final decision.
  17. Sportmanlike Conduct: No trash talking! The referee can assess a penalty and the TD reserves the right to eject any player for unsportsmanlike conduct, on or off the court, without a refund. Multiple abuses will ban a player from future VBAtl tournaments.
  18. Rain: Play wil be suspended or cancelled for the following conditions:
    • Heavy downpours or persistent rain that threatens the safety of players or the condition of the fields
    • Lightning, thunder, high winds, anything looking like a tornado!
  19. Court for Playoffs: Generally the higher seed picks the court, but the TD will dictate in the interest of moving the tournament along.
  20. Music: Bring your CD up; we'll play it if it's not too lewd. Don't camp in front of the speakers unless you can take it.
  21. Alcohol: All of our venues do not allow alcohol... what did you expect?
  22. Referees: Are expected to referee, not just scorekeep.

Weather Policy regarding tournament refunds

Tournaments will be held, postponed, or cancelled based on weather conditions at the time the tournament starts and the best forecast for the day. Fortunately, the forecast for rain is often wrong in Atlanta, but it can also change rapidly for the worse. If a tournament is cancelled before it starts, you will get a refund or credit, if your pool starts play, you will not receive a refund/credit (it's like Las Vegas and we're the house!). We generally wait out bad weather, but reserve the right to cancel or postpone at our option if the playing conditions so dictate or continued play could cause serious damage to the fields. Most of our expenses are incurred well before play starts, so we appreciate your understanding.

Play is organized with one work-up court and one winners' court as follows:

  2. Winners on the work-up court move to the winners court queue, losers get back on the list for the work-up court.
  3. Winners on the winners court keep playing unitl they lose; losers can get back in the queue for the work-up court.
  4. If a player is playing, they cannot be listed on any queue list.
